Duties and Responsibilities In this dynamic role, you will:

• Champion Safety: Deliver expert fire protection engineering guidance for the Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) and a diverse range of NASA customers
• Set the Standards: Specify fire, life safety, and property protection requirements; oversee design reviews, approvals, installations, and lead commissioning for both new and existing projects
• Innovate Compliance: Critically analyze designs, calculations, materials, and installation practices for fire suppression, detection, and life safety systems, ensuring they exceed all applicable codes and standards
• Drive Continuous Improvement: Conduct facility and operational fire inspections, perform risk analyses, produce action-driven improvement reports, and spearhead mitigating projects
• Evaluate and Create: Assess alternative, performance-based designs and determine equivalencies on behalf of the AHJ, ensuring innovative yet compliant solutions
• Advise and Consult: Serve as a trusted advisor on fire and life safety codes for various NASA programs, projects, and facility managers—recommending smart, viable alternatives
• Be on Call: Carry an emergency hotline duty cell phone and provide swift 24-hour response approximately one week out of every two months
• Investigate and Advise: Lend your expertise to incident investigations, delivering insights that enhance safety protocols
• Analyze Resources: Conduct water supply analyses to confirm optimal resources for fixed and portable suppression systems
• Plan for the Future: Lead strategic, long-range planning, engineering, and cost analysis initiatives for the Center’s fire/life safety systems and upcoming projects
• Educate and Inspire: Develop, travel (as necessary), and deliver engaging fire safety classes tailored for NASA personnel
• Ensure Excellence: Oversee internal audits, training sessions, and the comprehensive inspection, testing, and maintenance program for the Center’s fire systems

Qualifications 

• Bachelor’s degree in Fire Protection Engineering/Fire Protection Engineering Technology, OR
• Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering with 5 years of fire protection engineering experience, OR
• Associate’s degree in Fire Protection with 10 years of fire protection engineering experience
• Practical know-how of IBC, NFPA, UFC, and/or OSHA fire and building code requirements is a plus
• Professional Engineering License is preferred but not required
• State of Texas RME-G License is preferred or must be obtained within 6 months of employment
